Aug 28, 2010: The Dude Hates Cancer Benefit Show at Johnny Brendas
This benefit show will follow the 5th Annual The Dude Hates Cancer bowling tournament at North Bowl!

The Dude Hates Cancer (http://www.thedudehatescancer.com/) is a bowling tournament/concert that aims to raise money and awareness for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The annual event was founded in 2006 by Philly resident Tim Maxwell, who created the event in honor of his parents, both of whom are fighting forms of blood cancer. Since then, The Dude has grown each year and last year's benefit raised over $27,300 for LLS!

This year, participants are shooting to raise over $40,000, and the afterparty at Johnny Brenda's is a celebration of what we hope will be another successful campaign. The general public is invited with open arms to attend the after-party -- all proceeds of which go to LLS.

This year's afterparty once again features some of Philly's finest musical acts, who've donated their time and talents to support this worthy cause:

Swift Technique:
While Swift Technique draws from all world influences, their genre is uniquely Philadelphia. The idea of combining traditional jazz and funk with hip-hop seems almost too obvious, but artists are not pushing the boundaries. The music scene needs sincere, soulful performers that audiences of all age, race and background can enjoy collectively. By combining old influences with young, raw energy, Swift Technique is the collaboration of six souls on a mission to flip the music scene upside down.

Oso:
Oso is currently in the studio working on their second record. While the first record was mostly a creation inspired by singer, Mike Schaller's 3 year journey to the west coast, the new songs were written and are performed more collaboratively with brother Steve Schaller and long time friend and bassist Mike Gordon. The sound is characterized by strong vocal harmonies, dancing basslines, folk instrumentation and sparse arrangements.

The Spinning Leaves:
"Spinning Leaves has proven to be an unmistakable part of the new folk phenomenon in Philadelphia and beyond. Their sound, for one, is a whistle at the start of a great sprint, the bell of human musical freedom: spurts of gang vocals, slide guitars, dulcimers, and foot stomps over America melodies. And still, Spinning Leaves, the force, transcends the sound. They connect with artists, organizations and individuals to create movement in the Philadelphia musical landscape. Nearly anywhere you hear of innovative artistic activity, you hear this name in association." - Levi Landis - Executive Director, Philadelphia Folksong Society

Jeremy Hollis:
Jeremy Hollis is a songwriter whose music is influenced by growing up and living in the Philly area. His lyrics evoke nostalgia, humor, and simple pleasures while his rhythmic guitar and bluesy harmonica add the soundtrack for his stories. He is a one-man multimedia experience with a slide show projected behind him, so expect to see a collection of vintage images as he controls the projector with a foot pedal.

Jul 31, 2010: Chase Me, Comrade! at Hedgerow Theater
This lively Ray Cooney farce tells the story of a Russian ballet dancer who defects to the west. Unfortunately for him, a Ministry of Defense official lives there, who'd be obligated to turn the dancer in if he learned of him. The Minister's daughter, her fiance, Russian spies and even the local police get drawn into the story, leading to a series of mix-ups, misunderstandings and rampant confusion.

Foundation Launches National Initiative

Addressing Mental Health Stigma

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (July 23, 2010) - The National Black Nurses Foundation (NBNF) announces the launch of the community-based initiative, "Minding the Gap: Improving Mental Health - Eliminating Stigma." This Initiative examines the Clinical, Faith-Based, and Policy implications associated with mental illness, such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, while connecting communities with leaders in each field, to address the issues. This launch will take place in Philadelphia, in collaboration with the Temple University School of Medicine Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities, the Temple University Health System, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health Office of Health Equity. This collaborative endeavor takes place on September 23, 2010 at 5:30 pm, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Temple University School of Medicine - Wendy and Solomon Luo, MD Auditorium (Medical Education and Research Building, 3500 N Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140).

The purpose of this program is not to provide a cure for this issue, but to aid in changing the mindset of needing, seeking, encouraging, and providing help. To this regard, the NBNF looks to expand this Initiative to include cities such as Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Oakland, St. Louis, and Washington, DC. The Philadelphia program is supported by AstraZeneca. For more information, please visit www.nbnfoundation.us.
